The Mansion of the Lopukhins, a historical and cultural monument of the XVII-XIX centuries, is one of the most interesting specimen of the architectural tradition of Moscow town mansions. It is situated in the immediate proximity to the Kremlin, on the territory of the so called Bely Gorod (White Town) within the Golden Ring of Moscow, and is surrounded by architectural mansion ensembles of the Golitsyns, the Dolgorukys, and the Vyazemskys.

The mansion is unique for its architecture and more than three hundred years of history associated with such outstanding Russian figures as Peter the Great and Catherine the Second, the Lopukhins' family and a famous architect M.F. Kazakov, the Protasovs counts, the Bahmetievs princes and other people, who played an important role in Russia's life.

The Mansion of the Lopukhins consists of the main building, the outhouse with the coach-house, and the fence with the front gate pylons. Part of the outhouse and the coach-house were destroyed in the 1920s.

By the resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR (No. 50 dated from November 4, 1989), the ordinances of the Moscow City Executive Committee (No. 2248 dated from November 28, 1989) and the Moscow City Council (No. 812 from October 3, 1995) the Mansion of the Lopukhins was handed over to the International Centre of the Roerichs (ICR) to house the Centre-Museum of Nicolas Roerich founded at the initiative of Svetoslav Roerich who had bequeathed the cultural heritage of his family to the Museum. It is then that the full-scale scientific restoration of the entire ensemble of the mansion began. The restoration is financed from the ICR's own financial resources. The first phase of the project was completed. It foresaw reconstruction of the historic fence, restoration of the main building and the outhouse, reconstruction of the entire outdoor and indoor engineering infrastructure, and improvement of a part of the outside territory. The final improvement of the territory is in prospect.

The restoration work is conducted under the control of the Moscow Cultural Heritage Committee and specialists of the Central Scientific and Restoration Design Workshops of the Russian Ministry of Culture.

At present, the ICR commenced the restoration of the coach-house and part of the outhouse of the Lopukhins' mansion. These works will help recover the historic design and achieve completeness to the architectural ensemble of the mansion. Design proposals have been approved by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Scientific Research and Design Institute of the General Plan of Moscow, by the Moscow Cultural Heritage Committee, and other organizations. Taking into consideration the historical and cultural importance of the mansion and the quality of restoration work carried out by the ICR, the Moscow City Council included the Mansion of the Lopukhins into the Garland of Russian Estates program.
